Our 2025 Barbara Lee Lecture Series continues with Sandra Gamarra. Sandra’s work is deeply rooted in her Peruvian heritage and particularly in the medium of painting. Through the appropriation of culture, she challenges the ownership of culture: “Painting, as we know it in the West, has provided us with concepts and ideals that remain relevant today, not only within its own frames but also within the frames of our mobile phones. The classical genres of Western painting, which we perceive as neutral and universal, serve as a pretext for me to reflect on our involvement in the society we have built, its relationship with other ways of inhabiting the world, and the relevance of my own heritage as an artist who constructs images.”
She utilizes painting in a figurative way to conceptually cross-examine art and its mechanisms. Based on appropriations, her work acts as a mirror that displaces exhibition formats, alters the circulation of images, subverts the ownership of culture as well as the narrative between art and its viewer.
About the artist:
Sandra Gamarra was born in Lima. She has participated in collective exhibitions as the 29th Sao Paulo Biennial; the Italo-Latin American Pavillon (IILA) of the 53rd Venice Biennial; the 9th and 16th Cuenca Biennial; Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin and the Kunstlerhaus, Vienna. She recently participated with her project “Pinacoteca Migrante” at the 60th Venice Biennial.
About The Barbara Lee Lecture Series:
The Barbara Lee Lecture Series is an annual series that features faculty artists during our summer program. During this series, we open our campus to the public, welcoming our friends and neighbors into the conversations that take place at the School. After the summer program, the lectures become part of the Lecture Archive, a growing collection of recordings that can be accessed online or on request.
