We are supported by alumni, individuals, and foundations who believe in the importance of the School.
By donating you participate in a network of collaborative stewardship and artistic support that centers artists and fiercely protects this space for experimentation, learning, and creative exchange. We fundraise with care in order to protect the School’s independence and privacy, and gifts of every size are needed for Skowhegan to succeed.

Skowhegan Council
Council members provide direct support to the artists at Skowhegan. Curious about process, practice, and ideas, members meet in New York throughout the year for visits to studios, private collections, and exhibitions, and receive passes to art fairs worldwide. Drawing on the School’s deep history and artist network, the Council is an opportunity to learn and exchange ideas, encountering exceptional artists at various moments in their lives and practice.

Skowhegan Awards Dinner
In 1971, Skowhegan hosted the first event of its kind in New York City: an awards dinner to honor artists, philanthropists, and arts advocates, whose commitment and vision transformed the arts. This model, broadly adopted in our field, remains an annual opportunity for our community to gather in shared celebration and support. Funds raised at the Awards Dinner sustain our School, including our need-blind admissions policy, and fuel our intergenerational artist community.
Other Ways to Give
When you include Skowhegan in your estate, you vitalize your legacy while securing the School’s future as an independent institution that can make choices in the best interest of the artists it serves.
There are many flexible options including a bequest, charitable trust, retirement plan, or insurance policy, through which you can make a lasting contribution and support generations of artists to come. These gifts are gratefully acknowledged through membership within The Elms, a circle of supporters who have included Skowhegan in their estate. If you have already made such a provision in your plans, we hope you will let us know so that we can recognize this meaningful contribution to the School.
Skowhegan’s endowment consists of funds established for the long-term support of the School and participating artists. We have an investment and spending policy, approved by the Board of Trustees, that is intended to grow the portfolio over time, without taking inappropriate risk. We work with an investment advisor to assist in managing the investments.
- General Endowment: This forever flexible fund enables Skowhegan to direct resources to areas of greatest need and in the best interest of the artists we serve.
- Scholarship Endowment: This guarantees Skowhegan’s admissions are always based on merit, not financial circumstance.
- Faculty Endowment: This funds salaries and enables us to recruit talented artists working across disciplines and coming from diverse locations, nationally and internationally.
- Campus Maintenance Endowment: These funds care for our 350-acre campus, including fields, woods, and lakefront, and nearly 100 buildings, working to maintain a low-impact infrastructure and always seeking opportunities for greater sustainability.
