Shana Moulton joins us as the next speaker in our Barbara Lee Lecture Series, with her talk “Now that I’m a Woman, Everything is Strange.”

Shana will present a chronological-anecdotal outline of her work and the forces that shaped it. Beginning with the graduate school accidents that led to the creation of her alter ego Cynthia, the lecture traces the development of her practice over the past two decades through video, performance, installation and embarrassment. Along the way, it follows connections between second-wave feminism and Avon, Philip K. Dick and pottery, self-transforming machine elves and home décor, physical therapy and alchemy, and other associative leaps that demanded their own narratives.

About the artist:

Shana Moulton is a California-born-and-based artist working in video, performance, and installation. In 2002, she began the ongoing video series Whispering Pines, in which she performs as Cynthia, a fictional alter ego who searches for purpose and fulfillment through home décor, self-help paraphernalia, and cosmetic rituals. Set within a subtly off-kilter domestic world, Cynthia’s encounters with everyday objects transform the banal into the uncanny, revealing the mysterious and possibly magical qualities of consumer culture. Moulton has presented solo exhibitions at the Palais de Tokyo, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Kunsthaus Glarus, and the Museum of Modern Art. Her work has been featured in Artforum, The New York Times, Art in America, Flash Art, Hyperallergic, and Frieze, and on Art21.

About The Barbara Lee Lecture Series:

The Barbara Lee Lecture Series is an annual series that features faculty artists during our summer program. During this series, we open our campus to the public, welcoming our friends and neighbors into the conversations that take place at the School. After the summer program, the lectures become part of the Lecture Archive, a growing collection of recordings that can be accessed online or on request.
