Our next speaker for the 2025 Barbara Lee Lecture Series is Mike Cloud. Mike’s lecture focus on his relationship to criticism. He writes, “Critique is a form of interrogation and explanation as well as of judgement. How do I use written criticism of my work and the work of my peers to understand and transform my practice? What questions do critics ask of my work as art, and of me as an artist? What are the questions I ask of my work and myself?”
Mike dissects photographic and painterly forms, introducing text and content in a way that breaks legibility and creates new understandings. For Mike, painting is an object within a weirder cultural system of objects, motifs, symbols, and forms.
About the artist:
Mike Cloud is a Chicago based artist whose work is situated in the expanded field of painting and image making. Mike is an Associate Professor, and Director of Graduate Studies in the department of Art, Theory and Practice at Northwestern University in Illinois and his solo exhibitions include Called Ahead, 2024 at Fahrenheit Madrid, Spain; Tears in Abstraction, 2019 and Bad Faith and Universal Technique, 2014 at Thomas Erben Gallery, New York; The Myth of Education, 2018, Logan Center for the Arts, Chicago; and Special Projects: Mike Cloud, 2005, MoMA PS1, New York.

The Barbara Lee Lecture Series is an annual series that features faculty artists during our summer program. During this series, we open our campus to the public, welcoming our friends and neighbors into the conversations that take place at the School. After the summer program, the lectures become part of the Lecture Archive, a growing collection of recordings that can be accessed online or on request.
