“Faces of Skowhegan”
Until the early 2000s, emerging artists came to learn of Skowhegan through word of mouth and analog means. During its earliest years, the school sent out mailer announcements with details on the upcoming faculty artists, the natural environment, facilities, and paper applications. Much in the same way that art schools developed curriculum to grow and support new media and interdisciplinary practices, by the late 1980s, schools like Skowhegan shifted to video to spread the word and encourage applications. Short films like “Faces of Skowhegan,” produced by Jacob Burckhardt, were distributed to art schools around the country, ideally shown during classroom presentations to encourage curious artists to learn more and apply.
This film resides in our records and archives. Additional materials are accessible at archive@skowheganart.org and also through the Archives of American Art, Washington D.C.
