Next up in our Barbara Lee Lecture Series is Sofía Córdova with “TENSOR DE RODILLO (ROLLER TENSIONER).”

Sofía will give an artist talk traversing through the last decade of her performance, sound/music, video, installation practice with a focus on what questions (vs. 𝗂̶𝗆̶𝗉̶𝗎̶𝗅̶𝗌̶𝖾̶𝗌̶ ̶𝗈̶𝗋̶ ̶certainties) have guided her research, collaborations and production. While Córdova’s engagement with science fiction has over the years moved from narrative to formal container, she structurally views her works in the model of Le Guin’s Hainish cycle wherein peoples and events might never know of one another but nonetheless exist in the same galaxy, constellations in a shared universe. It might be a monologue of questions re: the technologies of revolutionary time (another clock is possible), what the hell are we doing (crucially, not doing) in the arts, what she is attempting to do (and more importantly with whom and for whom (??).  She will prioritize ‘showing’ over ‘telling’.

About the artist:

Sofía V. Córdova was born in 1985 in Carolina, Puerto Rico and she is based between Caguas, Puerto Rico and Oakland, California. She makes work that considers science fiction as alternative history, colonial contamination, climate change and migration, and most recently, revolution—historical and imagined. Sofía works in performance, video, sound, music, installation, photography, and sometimes taxidermy. Typically through collaboration, she sets up experiences to induce disorientation, reverie, loss, laughter, weeping.  Her work has been exhibited at The Whitney Museum of American Art, Tufts University Galleries, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, among others. She is a recent recipient of Creative Capital and Trellis Fund Awards. She is also one half of the music duo and experimental sound outfit XUXA SANTAMARIA.

About The Barbara Lee Lecture Series:

The Barbara Lee Lecture Series is an annual series that features faculty artists during our summer program. During this series, we open our campus to the public, welcoming our friends and neighbors into the conversations that take place at the School. After the summer program, the lectures become part of the Lecture Archive, a growing collection of recordings that can be accessed online or on request.
