Mine Are True Love Stories: Making Video as Film

With Peggy Ahwesh, Karl McCool, and John Thomson, moderated by Johanna Fateman.

This panel is the first in a series of conversations centered around the legacy and work of the late artist and Skowhegan alum Ellen Cantor (1961-2013). The panel is composed of presenters with a deep understanding of Ellen’s work and formal knowledge of film and video from critical, curatorial, and artistic perspectives. The discussion aims to contextualize her work in the formal histories she drew from—mainstream and independent film, video art, pornography, and photography.

About the series:

Titled after a statement by Ellen Cantor in 1995, Mine Are True Love Stories takes the work of an artist as a prompt to discuss different ideas in the field of contemporary art. Ellen Cantor was one of the most influential artists of her generation charting new feminist representations of sexuality and female empowerment. Organized by curator and writer Natasha Marie Llorens, the series  brings together artists and scholars amidst an unprecedented joint effort of the Estate of Ellen Cantor and seven organizing venues presenting and discussing her work.
