William Zorach, Special Lecture 1958
Abstract
William Zorach gives a lecture talking about his painting and sculpture practice. Throughout the lecture, Zorach engages in an intimate conversation with the participants, telling them that art is about healing. Zorach states that a great artist is someone who is dedicated to great ideas. Zorach states that one will never be able to commercialize art, religion, love, and justice. Zorach encourages the participants to try different mediums in art, for experimentation will always lead to growth. Zorach then encourages the participants to understand how to find good and real art, and sift through the garbage of so much bad art there is out there. Zorach elaborates further on this by stating that the works of art that are expressed with great simplicity and power are the works that will be deemed as great art. Zorach also tells the participants to draw constantly, for drawing is very important and it will allow them to familiarize themselves with the human form. Zorach ends his lecture telling the participants that they have to work for everything they want to achieve in this world.
