Walter S. Murch, Paul Mellon Distinguished Fellow Lecture 2007
Abstract
Academy Award winning film editor and sound designer Walter Murch delivers a lecture on the hundred year history of cinema. The speaker also draws on the history of literature, music, the visual arts, and technology as relevant to the development of cinema as it was realized throughout the 20th century. Following the lecture, the speaker answers questions about the multiplicity of authorship in film creation; the possibilities of conjunctive and disjunctive use of sound and image for creating experience; how he chooses films he would like to work on and the nature of his editing practice; the morphing ability of cinematic audiences to understand cinematic constructs; and the concept of sound within a strictly visual art, such as painting.
