Vito Acconci, Visiting Artist Lecture 2011

In this lengthy lecture, Vito Acconci talks about his interdisciplinary practice spanning performance, architecture, installation, and writing over the last five decades. Acconci talks about the common language artists has in the late 1960s and early 1970s which was all about finding oneself, how to get to the core of oneself, and how time provided a kind of space where a person could achieve this. Acconci later speaks about how these notions gradually shifted as an artist, and how community engaged practices started to emerge more for artists including Acconci. Acconci mentions that the gallery space also started to reflect this by gradually becoming a community meeting place. when you design a space you are dictating peoples behaviour in a space, seeking to dismantle the totalitarian nature of architecture. Acconci later engages in a long conversation with the participants and faculty members, with ideas surrounding his work: time, space, energy, sound, environment, among many others.
