Tommy Lanigan-Schmidt, Resident Artist Lecture 1991

Abstract

Tommy Lanigan-Schmidt gives a lecture at Skowhegan spanning his life as an interdisciplinary artist and activist. Throughout the lecture, Lanigan-Schmidt shows slides of works that have influenced him and shares anecdotes about his life experiences. Lanigan-Schmidt also talks about his reverence for folk art, the role humour plays in his work, and his reverence for working with unconventional materials. Lanigan-Schmidt ends his lecture by focusing on his sculpture practice and how it has become increasingly become important for him to look at his neighbourhood in New York City through the lens of economic oppression.
