Susan Shatter, Resident Artist Lecture 1977

Susan Shatter gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about her painting practice. Some of the themes Shatter studies in her work includes an exploration of issues around the cosmos, architecture, the relationship one has to natural geography, and a fascination with water and its relationship to the land. Shatter then mentions the importance light has on her thinking as a painter. Shatter sees colour as something constantly being affected by the light and region she is painting, and sunlight allowing her to transform the ways in which she approaches colour in her paintings. Shatter also explores scale and cityscapes in her painting as well, drawing from the urban landscape of New York and Boston. Shatter ends the lecture talking to the participants about her own experience being a participant at Skowhegan in the 1960s.
