Sigrid Sandstrom, Resident Artist Lecture 2014

Sigrid Sandstrom shows slides of her paintings and talks about her life growing up in Sweden. Sandstrom reflects on how she gradually made the shift from science, to working in theatre, to eventually becoming in artist. Sandstrom also reflects on her time in graduate school, her time as a participant at Skowhegan and the Core Program in Texas. For Sandstrom, all of these experiences have led to an interest she has developed in her painting practice; the notion of place, and more specifically landscape. Sandstrom structures her talk focusing on three past and present collaborative projects; the first one exploring melancholy and the relationship to nature and landscape, the second project works with three other collaborators thinking about painting as a mode of thinking, and the third one focuses on the concept of ignorance as an integral part of contemporary art. Sandstrom also talks about the experience she has had gradually embracing printmaking as an artistic practice as well. For Sandstrom, printmaking has allowed her to undergo an extremely physical awareness of how one tries to think, the difficulty in that, as well as the incredible rigour that it produces.
