Sidney Simon, Special Lecture 1981

Abstract

Interim Director Sidney Simon gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about his interdisciplinary practice which spans drawing, woodcarving, sculpture, terracotta, painter, and mural art. Simon draws from autobiography, experiences in teaching, storytelling, and his influence in architecture and bauhaus among other things to develop his artistic practice. Simon also tells the participants how he is invested in portraiture, and what one can do with a portrait. Simon is interested in how portraiture painting can be smelt, and how we can imagine it to sound. Simon makes portraits of family, friends, loved ones, and strangers. Simon ends his lecture telling participants that being an artist is a difficult and risky thing, but this is something Simon has decided to do, and he feels strongly about making change as an artist.
