Shahzia Sikander, Visiting Artist Lecture 2005

Shahzia Sikander gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about her interdisciplinary practice spanning painting, drawing, indian miniature, installation, and animation. Drawing from the history of indian miniature, and ancient manuscripts, Sikander explores ideas of creating new visually compelling methods of working in order to inject new meanings into traditional forms of art. Sikander uses these methodologies and ways of thinking and working to also create a space to have larger conversations around ideas of kitsch/subversion, historical memory, diasporic landscapes and those in the global South, nostalgia, religion, and identity formation.
