Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch, Visiting Artist Lecture 2015
Abstract
Artists Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch give a lecture reflecting on their many years working together as artists. Trecartin and Fitch talk about the many movies, theatrical environments, and sculptures that they have created over the years. For Trecartin and Fitch, collaboration is at the core of their practice. The artists also talk about the need to preserve a space where one doesn’t have to determine an authorship of a piece until it’s done. This gives them the freedom to change the work so it doesn’t become fixed in one type of production. Trecartin and Fitch talk about the wonderful freedom they have achieved working with many people when creating their work. This has allowed them to insert multiple opportunities that can transform what they create. Working with multiple cameras and thinking about the proliferation of cameras are also ideas the artists talk about. This type of working to capture all this information has allowed Trecartin and Fitch to also collapse the binary structures of time.
