Rochelle Feinstein, Visiting Artist Lecture 1999

Abstract

Citing her belief that all art is produced in a context, Rochelle Feinstein talks about subjects that intrigue her: the work of other artists, books, movies (particularly American movies), photography, architecture, American culture and painting as artifacts. On a formal level, she talks about the effect of peripherality, light, color, space, modernity, grids and squares, and home photographs of beautiful subjects in nature. In a discussion about her own work, Feinstein refers to a time (around 1986) when painting in general and her painting in particular were in trouble, and how she found freedom and resolution by approaching each painting with unique rules, limitations or problems to be solved.
