Robert Storr, Resident Artist Lecture 2002

Robert Storr gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about his painting and curatorial practice as well as his time as a participant. Storr tells the participants to realize there is no dominant ideology when it comes to making art. Storr also tells the participants that they have to know their adversaries better, and have to find what they are after so they can figure out what their relationship is with their adversaries. Storr goes further, advising the participants to always be aware of the many histories that surround them, and how these histories are constantly being constructed, never truly fixed as one may think they are. Storr says that nowadays artists can really embody many roles if they wish: as writers, critics, and exhibition organizers as well. Storr tells the participants of the importance of finding a community for themselves where people are making and thinking about the kind of work that they may also be interested in and who have a piece of the puzzle that they may not necessarily have.
