Robert Morris, Visiting Artist Lecture 1970

Abstract

Robert Morris gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about his painting, drawing, and sculpture practice. Morris engages with a wide range of material including rubber, felt, metal, copper and steel, as well as his own body to create his work. Morris tells the participants that he thinks about his body as a space of documentation to orient an experience beyond words. This allows Morris to create work that can be free and also lead to political actions. Considering himself politically engaged, Morris thinks about the systems of economics that helps him inform this way of thinking. Morris speaks about the importance of collectives that can change bad systems which exist in art through direct political action without preaching. Morris ends his lecture telling the participants that collaborating with others can allow them to draw from their imagination to make their ideas stronger.
