Robert Gober, Resident Artist Lecture 1994

Artist Robert Gober gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about his painting and sculpture practice, specifically using painting as a process that arrives at sculpture. Drawing from identity and personal experiences, Gober is interested in the tradition of sculpture to create something that is exactly what it represents and uses the cube to inject it with expressionistic, perverse, and Freudian content. Gober is interested in cliches of everyday objects, using found imagery to create them and working with craftsmen to cultivate new skills to build these objects. Gober ends his lecture reflecting on his ongoing desire for cleansing, and how this helped him to deal with coming out as gay during the Aids epidemic in the 1980s.
