Robert Broderson, Resident Artist Lecture 1966

Abstract

Robert Broderson begins his lecture at Skowhegan by giving a reading then followed by a slide-show presentation of his work. Broderson speaks about the influence that old masters have had on his works, stating how he has learned to love and respond to the spirit of these old masters for they constantly teach him something. Broderson also works with reproductions, sometimes doctoring them to create new works of art. Another theme in Broderson’s work is self-portraiture, which Broderson seeks to create through words and slides of his works. Broderson tells the students that in order to become a great artist, one must have no secrets, and be pleased with sharing their knowledge. Broderson believes that blindness and stupidity are blocks he must fight through, as they can prevent him from listening to these old master artists. Broderson then states how he is committed to remaining an open person, to find the joys of living even through his suffering, and not to succumb to cynicism or hatred as an artist.
