Regina José Galindo, Visiting Artist Lecture 2015
Abstract
Artist Regina Jose Galindo gives a lecture showing work from the late 1990s to the present. The core idea of Galindo’s practice explores ideas of creating actions and images that reflect aspects of the reality of her context; that which is near and some of which she is able to see lying beyond. Galindo talks about her complex relationship with Guatemala, and how it has allowed her to investigate relations of power in order to subvert them. For Galindo, she sees the various works in her oeuvre as bridges and reflections. This allows Galindo to reflect on the tragedy of her own country, and how each corner has a version of tragedy. Differences between activism and making art are also important for Galindo. Galindo states that she does not take the same level of risk as activists do, and the end result of her practice is always creating an object.
