Philip Pearlstein, Visiting Artist Lecture 1972

In his fourth lecture at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (additional lectures in 1965, 1967, 1968, 1978 and 1986), painter Philip Pearlstein shows a film done by one of his models of him working on three pieces: a lithograph, an etching and a wash drawing. He also shows slides of earlier work and recent work (paintings, drawings and prints). Autobiographical information and anecdotes about the New York art world in the 1950s and beyond punctuate the presentation, and the speaker chronicles his evolution to what he refers to as an ambiguous position as a New Realist. A considerable portion of the lecture is devoted to comments on printmaking.
