Philip H. Grausman, Resident Artist Lecture 1973

Philip H. Grausman gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about his artistic practice, primarily rooted in Sculpture. Grausman uses a wide range of material including hammer, copper, glass, sheet metal, stainless steel, plaster, as well as working with plants, bugs, embryonic forms and other insects. Grausman is interested in working with scale and the human body, as well as thinking about the role sculpture can play in ideas of portraiture and family. Grausman tells the participants that in order to understand sculpture, artists should always look at sculpture through every angle. Grausman goes on to reflect on his current sculptural experimentations which looks at his use of working with stone and polishing stone to create more sensuality with different materials. Grausman ends his lecture reflecting on the relationship that time has with his sculptural practice. Time has allowed Grausman to think more deeply about observation and decompose the structures he works with.
