Philip Evergood, Visiting Artist Lecture 1961

Abstract

Philip Evergood gives a lecture and shares a series of slides of his paintings at Skowhegan, talking about his life experiences and how they have shaped him as an artist. Evergood believes that art comes from experiences, contact with nature, life, with living, and with feeling. For Evergood, true artists are the ones who are able to speak clearly in whatever mode of expression they choose, and translate the message of their love for life. Evergood then shifts into a technical analysis of painting, telling the students that they must know how to prepare a canvas, understand the different quality of brushes, and have a knowledge of pigments and craftsmanship. Evergood ends his lecture by telling the students that no one is born an artist, they must learn the knowledge of control, understand the great cultures of the past, and see life as something that must be lived and seen in the present moment.
