Peter Saul, Visiting Artist Lecture 2016

Artist Peter Saul talks about his painting practice during this Skowhegan lecture, reflecting on his time living in Paris during the 1950s and New York city during the 1960s. Saul talks about his romantic perceptions of being an artist, and how it doesn’t have to do with learning but being in complete solitude in a land unknown to yourself. Saul goes on to reflect on his painting practice being shaped by cultural, historical and political events, his identity, popular iconography, and print culture. Saul goes on to also reflect on the importance of reflecting on one’s mistakes as an artist, and how for Saul, the mistake that has continued to define his conceptual practice as an artist was to be influenced to create work based on what seemed popular in the world.
