Peter Saul, Resident Artist Lecture 1978

Beginning with examples of his painting from the early 1960s, when he was living in Europe, painter Peter Saul speaks about the motifs drawn from common culture in his early work. He talks about periodically incorporating text in his work, and about his lack of training as well as lack of interest in technique. Continuing with work done after his return to the United States in the mid-Sixties, the speaker shows examples of his politically inspired paintings drawn from issues such as the Vietnam War, the Berkeley riots and major political figures, and art, emphasizing his use intention to amuse and offend through caricature and parody. The last slides are of a few sculptures. The recording is poor, with many unintelligible sections.
