Nicole Miller, Resident Artist Lecture 2016

In this lecture, Nicole Miller talks about her work as a video artist showing a series of videos. For Miller, the aspect of screening and shooting is a big part of the work, for it allows a new type of art experience to be created through the way representation and images are related. Miller also views looking through the lens as looking at a mirror. Miller talks about active viewing, and how it can reach into a new reality. For Miller, the screen is not a sounding board of reality but an influencer of reality. This allows Miller to hopefully give the viewer a chance to be more actively aware and less in a dreamlike state. Miller also uses the idea of documentary as a divide in her work, pointing out the influences of images and representation into the real world. Miller is also a true believer of the use of images and representation, for it allows her to use the document of someone talking about a past trauma and connect it to bigger ideas of the real and the reality, and how this is affected by images.
