Michelle Grabner, Resident Artist Lecture 2015

Artist Michelle Grabner gives a lecture talking about her writing, teaching and curating practice. She begins the lecture by doing a reading for the audience, which allows Grabner to reflect on ideas she is currently grappling with. Grabner talks about the need to always critique herself, and exploring the space of boredom as a way of protracting, compressing, and playing with time. Throughout the lecture, Grabner talks about her curatorial practice as well, ranging from running the Suburban in Milwaukee to her experience curating the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Grabner also reflects on the studio as a space that continues to fascinate her, where she can think critically about things and wrestle with them on a daily basis. For Grabner, some of the ideas she is currently grappling with include engaging with notions of cliches and categories, large scale abstract painting, the relationship between local and regional, and affect among others.
