Mary Frank, Visiting Artist Lecture 1983

Mary Frank gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about her interdisciplinary practice which ranges from monoprint, drypoint, clay, ceramics, and woodmaking. Frank is interested in finding repetition in her work, and also interested in creating more community settings for her artistic practice, as a way of never making any kind of art alone. Frank also talks about her interest in Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, and how this has fueled her interdisciplinary practice. For Frank, in order for her work to matter and have a connection to other life beside ones own can be difficult. Frank tells the participants that to be an artist and not to be a narcissist has become difficult, but it is always important to operate in a mindset of being an artist where one doesn’t operate from a place of hyper individualism.
