Mac Wells, Resident Artist Lecture 1969
Abstract
Mac Wells gives a lecture at Skowhegan where he shows a series of slides of his paintings ranging from different materials: oils, acrylics, raw canvas, and un-stretched. At the core of Wells’ work is an interest in ideas of exploring force-fields and physics in his painting practice. For Wells, the term force-field is an analogy that helps him think about deep spatial concepts, ideas, gravity, natural phenomena, and ideas of surrealism as well which he tries to have as a motif in many of his paintings. Ultimately, although Wells describes himself as an abstract painter, he chooses to use the language of abstraction to create a visual experience that is rooted in landscape and planetary forms.
