Luis Camnitzer, Visiting Artist Lecture 2014

Abstract

Interdisciplinary artist Luis Camnitzer structures his talk about the importance of anthropological distance which is at the core of his artistic practice. For Camnitzer, this distance has allowed him to be placed closer to anthropology then art because it doesn’t use aesthetic value judgments. For Camnitzer, art is about what it can do for others. Camnitzer also reflects on his interest in language; both the medium and model but through a visual lens. For Camnitzer, this fascination with language flows into his interest in the nuances between Spanish and English; how Spanish is written between the lines, and English in the lines. Camnitzer ends his lecture by stating his desire to focus on the importance of art to be a field to acquire, expand, and generate knowledge.
