Louis Cameron, Resident Artist Lecture 2016
Abstract
Artist Louis Cameron begins his talk by honouring the victims of the pulse Nightclub massacre, reading their names to everyone. Cameron then begins his lecture reflecting on his own trajectory of being apart of Skowhegan through many years: as a participant, then a dean, and now apart of the faculty. Cameron speaks about his interdisciplinary practice spanning painting, found material, drawing and collage. Whether it is the graffiti murals, to Cameron’a series of Monochrome paintings exploring them of surveillance, to a series of portraits he constructed entitled Have you Seen us, that viewers would normally find on milk cartons. Cameron’s work touches upon issues of power, race, history, and privilege.
