Lisa Yuskavage, Visiting Artist Lecture 2003
Abstract
In this candid and autobiographical lecture, Lisa Yuskavage gives a lecture exploring her representational painting practice. Yuskavage is interested in creating personas to save herself while painting, which has led her to develop her interest in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Yuskavage comments on the importance of always painting from life, photograph and memory. This has allowed Yuskavage to explore ideas of manipulation in her paintings so she can learn how to have an affect on people. Yuskavage also explores the importance of humility as an artist, by always entering her studio to make sure she can dismantle her self righteousness, start from the gutter and raise herself up. Yuskavage ends her lecture telling the participants that for her, making art allows her to talk to people and have a dialogue with them.
