Lisa Milroy, Visiting Artist Lecture 2005

Artist Lisa Milroy gives a lecture at Skowhegan exploring her interdisciplinary practice ranging from painting, drawing, and textiles. Milroy also talks about her longstanding relationship with Japan and the influence it has had on her work. For Milroy, her many travels to Japan have allowed her to experience feelings of pleasure, influence and continue to fall in love with looking. Milroy is also interested in ideas of repetition and how to stay more present as an artist. This experience allows Milroy to explore her relationship with sensuality and the repetition of words to empty them of their literal meaning. This process gives Milroy the tools to create more rules for her painting practice. Milroy ends her lecture reflecting on ideas of home, saying to the participants how home is just a condition and a state, drawing once again on Japanese culture to illustrate this point; the geisha being a symbol of exploring the dynamics of being an outsider.
