Liliana Porter, Visiting Artist Lecture 2016

Interdisciplinary artist Liliana Porter talks about her wide-ranging career in this lecture, showing a series of drawings, woodcuts, photographs and paintings. At the core of Porter’s practice lies ideas of reality as a vehicle to construct images and memories from moments that are inherently ungraspable. Porter talks about an imaginable space where everything can become mixed up; a space where no one truly knows history: what comes before us or after us. Porter has held onto this fascination in creating her work as an artist as well as her attraction to strange objects. Porter also talks about this need to confront presumptuous ideas and try to correct them through art, and how this leads to a metaphor to try and look for the truth of our history; a history that is full of mistakes. Porter ends her lecture by talking about confronting tasks as artists that will be bigger then our possibility, and how it also leads us to realizing that multiple things that can happen at the same time.
