Larry Rivers, Visiting Artist Lecture 1966

Abstract

Larry Rivers gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about his interdisciplinary practice which spans printmaking, sculpture, drawing and painting practice. Rivers incorporates many different mediums in his work including plexiglass, wood, neon, light, and metal to name a few. Although Rivers’ work is rooted in figurative painting, Rivers states how all aspects of work have been influenced by understanding the psychological aspects of the individual. drawing from personal experiences and observing the world around him. Other core themes that have influenced Rivers oeuvre include his travels, autobiographical narratives, political histories, and finding humour in the everyday. Rivers turns to reflecting on the history of old master paintings, especially the work of Gericault as a way to find inspiration to explore his complex ideas and execute his work.
