Lan Tuazon, Resident Artist Lecture 2019

Interdisciplinary artist Lan Tuazan gives a lecture at Skowhegan focusing on the last 10 years of her practice. Her work– which spans photography, sculpture and installation– looks at history and space as a way to occupy the social. Tuazan tells the participants that as artists, we are always historically bounded and will continue to arrive at moments in history at particular times. Tuazan also reflects on her interests in the structures of ideology and how she sees it as something founded on an economic base held up by the cultural state apparatus to reproduce power. Tuazan explores these ideas by mentioning a long term project she is working on entitled The Trilogy. Other interests Tuazan reflects on during her lecture are the way artists form their relationship to space and urban planning, thinking about artefacts and the cultural apparatus of museums, how museums represent culture, geology, cross sampler splicing, and coming to terms with the fact that nothing remains fixed.
