Liu Kuo-sung, Visiting Artist Lecture 1966

Abstract

Liu Kuo-sung–with translation from Bill Cummings–talks about his experience being a Chinese artist from Taiwan. Liu talks about his artist collective, the Fifth Moon Group, and shares slides of his work featuring his paintings, drawings, collage, and prints. Liu tells the students how he spent more than ten years focused on the Chinese landscape. Liu goes into detail about the titles and processes of creating his works. Liu reflects on the Chinese calendar being a source of inspiration for his work, and explains the difference from the western calendar. Liu then shares some material processes of his work, such as creating his images from the back and the front, using many different materials such as gouache and bamboo brushes, and soaking his paper with water before working on it. For Liu, he paints, then removes the fiber from the paper he uses, and then paints on the surface again.
