Kenneth Callahan, Resident Artist Lecture 1961
Abstract
Kenneth Callahan gives a lecture talking about his artistic practice at Skowhegan. Callahan focuses on his paintings, which for him is a philosophy and a way of life the that helps him function as an expression of his thoughts. These living forms that are created through painting may sometimes have a living form, and sometimes it may not, but ultimately it is always an expression that Callahan seeks to create. Callahan reflects on how his time living in Seattle and studying the art of Japanese and Chinese artists has influenced his work. leading him to explore Buddhism, mysticism, and cultivating an inner eye for himself as an artist. Callahan uses these interests in Buddhism and mysticism to inform the participants how it is important for them to create positive and meaningful roots in their lives. This will allow artists to find their way in the world, and will allow them to really thrive as artists.
