2015

Julie Ault, Paul Mellon Distinguished Fellow Lecture 2015

Abstract

Through a series of slides and presented writing, interdisciplinary artist Julie Ault centres her talk focusing on diverse archival practices, memory, and historical representation. Ault breaks her practice down into three sections; firstly encompassing writing, secondly, mixing in informal speech with distilled formal expression and realizing that art making is a form of knowledge production, and thirdly reflecting on the boundaries between subjective and objective knowledge as being fractured. Ault also talks about her time in Group Material, and how this experience was rooted in friendship and dialogue as a way to produce culture and not just consume it through social process, cultural democracy and collaboration. Ault also reflects on the need to focus on archiving marginalized practices and events which are often on the verge of becoming history but not becoming history because of a lack of means to archive.
