Judith Linhares, Visiting Artist Lecture 2017
Abstract
Through a series of printmaking, drawings, and paintings, artist Judith Linhares gives an autobiographical lecture that reflects on themes of personal narratives, geographical landscape, and family histories. Themes of pedagogy, domesticity, populism, and feminism are also ideas that entered Linhares’s practice as an artist throughout the 1960s during her years of teaching in Oakland public schools and the 1970s. Linhares reflects on external influences that have continued to impact her practice as an artist, whether it is her relationships to comic book illustrators to painters such as Poussin and Matisse. Linhares also mentions the desire she has to create paintings that is for everyone. Being raised in an egalitarian, working class, pro-labour environment are beliefs Linhares holds onto, as she comments on global themes of hierarchy, power, and authority which she notes seem to have grown to prominence.
