John Chamberlain, Resident Artist Lecture 1985

John Chamberlain gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about his process of making sculpture out of automobile parts and his process as an abstract painter. Chamberlain is interested in the process of working with materials. whether it is using machinery to manipulate it or experimenting with colour and form. Chamberlain tells the participants that the first step to a nervous breakdown is taking one’s work too seriously. Chamberlain also shares a video with the participant where he talks about his artistic practice through a series of question and answer sessions. Chamberlain ends his lecture stating how common materials can be used as a vehicle to be turned into unique pieces of inspiration, because common materials don’t get in the way of doing an uncommon thing
