Joanne Greenbaum, Resident Artist Lecture 2003

Joanne Greenbaum is an artist working in painting. Greenbaum explains that for her, sometimes making work isn’t a physical thing, but an internal thing. Developing an internal process has allowed Greenbaum to think through ideas and conceptually build a new body of work before she physically creates it. Greenbaum stresses on the importance of artists not to be boxed into specific categories, and create work that is cumulative. Greenbaum dismantles stereotypes of abstract painting to create new work for herself which has allowed her painting practice to also expand into structure and handwriting. This expansion has allowed Greenbaum to explore  creating paintings about fictional sculptures. Greenbaum ends her lecture by reflecting on the empowerment she felt finally ridding herself of the external forces that pressured her to make certain types of art. Greenbaum ends her lecture telling the participants that she doesn’t have to prove to anyone that she is an artist, and nor should they.
