Joanna Malinowska, Resident Artist Lecture 2016
Abstract
Interdisciplinary artist Joanna Malinowska begins her lecture at Skowhegan by talking about a video piece she made for the 2012 Whitney Biennal, and how that particular video has allowed her to think about creating work that finds different ways to appropriate elements from a range of different ideas: whether they be historical ideas such as the gold mine rush in the United States, her time spent in the Yukon, Canada, drawing on soft sculpture as an interest in anthropology and ethnography, site specificity whether in New York or Poland, or collaborating with a range of different people ranging to create work. Malinowska also talks in length about her project for the Venice Biennale, where she collaborated with three colleagues to go to the village of Cazale in Haiti and present the Polish Opera Halka, intertwining her interests in colonial histories, site specificity, and using film and installation as a way to capture these performances and stories.
