Jean Lowe, Visiting Artist Lecture 2003
Abstract
Artist Jean Lowe gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about her interdisciplinary practice exploring tableau, installation, sculpture, painting, and papier mache. Lowe is interested in exploring ideas of pleasure, greek mythologies, rhythm, and staging; all which are driving forces behind engaging with so many different materials. Lowe comments on how she sees installation as something that is linked to consumerism. This link has made Lowe also think about the importance art can have to explore ideas of political change and activism. Lowe ends her lecture talking about her landscape paintings. For Lowe, utilizing drawing as a tool to construct her large-scale landscape paintings has allowed her to continue exploring new ideas of value, presence, and power.
