Jane Hammond, Visiting Artist Lecture 2005

Interdisciplinary artist Jane Hammond gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about her practice spanning sculpture, painting, drawing, and video. Hammond works turns found information into paintings. For Hammond, her interest in taking apart information allows her to deploy it in many different contexts. This process leads to entropy seeping into the information systems, which gives her work’s meaning more elasticity. Hammond is also interested in collaboration, because it allows her to forget about oneself, something she views as healthy for an artist. Hammond is also interested in themes of alchemy, phrenology, systems of knowledge and revising old paintings. These interests allow her to create different realities as an artist and transform ideas of fiction into facts.
