James McGarrell, Resident Artist Lecture 1964

Painter James McGarrell gives an illustrated lecture about his work from 1956, explaining the ideas, metaphors and subjects contained within them, including a preference for the personal poetics of subject as opposed to political art; citing artists by whom he was influenced or whose motifs he borrowed; and describing the painterly challenges with which he likes to present himself. Some but not all of the works are identified by title. The speaker lectured again at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1968.
