James Leshay, Visiting Artist Lecture 1961

Abstract

James Leshay gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about the experiences that have shaped him as an artist, and offering words of wisdom. Leshay believes that there is a difference between a professional artist and an amateur artist. According to Leshay, a professional artist is someone who is inspired to seek out their deepest truths. Once these truths are identified, the artist’s job is to create and express them through painting and sculpture. Whereas an amateur artist is someone who is simply a manufacturer of images. Leshay urges the students to become professional artists. Leshay also states how (to him) an artist is someone who is on the discovery of a personal truth that can universally become an eternal development through creative practice. Leshay also tells the students the importance of critical feedback to their peers. Leshay says that constructive criticism is possible if one gives it honestly, sincerely, and says what they believe. Leshay ends the lecture by sharing a series of slides of his paintings, and taking questions.
