James Hyde, Resident Artist Lecture 2003

James Hyde give a lecture talking about his painting practice, rooted in ideas of valuing procedures over content as an abstract painter. Hyde comments on the importance of recognizing the difference between formalism and abstraction in his work, and how identifying this difference has led him to discover new questions on what abstract painting is. Hyde also comments on how the undercharged parts of painting are what interests him the most. Hyde then goes on to describe the process of painting and how he engages with many different kinds of material including styrofoam and sculpture to name a few. This multi-disciplinary approach to painting has allowed him to become interested in the fabric quality of a painting, and to develop the tools to explore collaboration.
